Sitar

Sitars have been around for thousands of years. They are well known as an Indian classical musical instrument. The Sitar instrument probably developed from the Persian Lute sometime during the 18th century.

The works of Pavit Ravi Shankar in the late 1950s are what made the Sitar instrument known to the western world. The Beatles George Harrison played the Sitar in the song "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". The Rolling Stones had also used a Sitar in the song "Paint it Black". The Yardbirds were actually the first to record the Sitar in pop music. They had hired a Sitar player to play the hook on the song "Heart Full of Soul" but the recorded version with the Sitar was never released. As a result, the first person to actually get credit for bringing the Sitar into pop music was George Harrison from the Beatles.
